Creative Writing 2020_7

Charnwood Grove organised and ran a number of creative writing sessions via zoom during the Covid lockdown period, each session chose a specific subject and using some key inspirational words, the participants crafted these magnificent creations.

Session 7- Summer Fruit

Summer Fruits

Squirrel at my window eating sunflower seeds, the bounty of Summer. Gorging itself and seeking more. It has been visiting daily, first with its mother and sibling but now it has its independence.

I try to keep the feeder topped up but the wood pigeons have found it and follow hard on the squirrel’s heels to clear the ground and the feeder. I shoo them off as they’ve wrecked one feeder already with their puffed-out weight.

The squirrel leaps and bounds across the grass, then sits on its haunches in the shadow of the cherry tree, watching everything.

A woodpecker arrives at the cherry tree as the squirrel scuttles off, his Summer ‘fruit’ the insects in its bark. The cherries have yet to ripen.

Rose-hips and haws have started to swell in the hedgerow and elderberries are forming now the blossom has fallen. Sloes and chestnuts protect themselves with thorns and spikey cases – none shall taste their fruits until they are ready.

Summer Fruit

A taste of peach,

of rhubarb, plum, blackcurrant- even apple,

are now one.

A shining jar

of sticky, dark-red sweetness

all this week.

Thank you

every one of you

for you made this with me-

you made this for me.

and at this time of times

we made our unique jam.

We were all together

shining though

the trees and leaves

our berry-brightness

shining through.
